PAULINO MACHADO, Natalia Ilse. THE ADVERBIAL PHRASES OF TIME AND ASPECT IN THE 18TH AND 19TH CENTURIES OF BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE: A STUDY OF THEIR ORDER. Lingüística [online]. 2013, vol.29, n.1, pp.59-80. ISSN 2079-312X.
For any linguistic theory, studying adverbials is a challenge. This work is about the position adverbial phrases of Time and Aspect can assume in clauses of personal letters from the 18th and 19th centuries, according to the theoretical framework of Functional Linguistics. The overall objective was to perceive in which way the semantic and discursive function of the adverbial phrase can influence the tendency of positions held in the sentences of the corpus under analysis. During this research, we found out that the positions assumed by the adverbial phrases seem to be influenced by the discursive function. The adverbial phrases that functioned only as a temporal specification filled mostly in postpositions of the verb. We also observed adverbial phrases of Aspect being less sensitive to the functions established by discourse than the adverbial phrases of Time and the deitic factor seems to incline the adverbial phrases towards the preverbal positions.
