Resumen

LA PAZ BARBARICH, ESTEBAN. LINGUISTIC IMPERIALISM: THE CASE OF ENGLISH IN THE URUGUAYAN SECONDARY EDUCATION (1941-2003). Lingüística [online]. 2012, vol.27, n.1, pp.168-196. ISSN 2079-312X.

This article discusses the place of English in terms of the number of hours of instruction in relation to the other foreign languages that are or have been part of the curriculum of the Uruguayan secondary education, as shown in the plans of study of 1941, 1963, 1968, 1976, 1986, 1993, 1996, and 2003. This objective requires particular attention to the status of the language; in this case, its use in a privileged field such as teaching in the period under study. Through this and other studies, it may become apparent how English has penetrated into the corpus of Spanish and how it has increased its presence in the educational field, in relation to other foreign languages that integrate (or have integrated) the curriculum of the Uruguayan middle-level education.

Palabras clave : imperialism; language policies; English; foreign languages; teaching; plans of study.
