Abstract
NEUSCHRANK, ALINE and BARRETO MATZENAUER, CARMEN LÚCIA. PALATALIZATION IN THE BP DIACHRONY: THE EMERGENCE OF PALATAL SEGMENTS IN THE LIGHT OF A PHONOLOGICAL THEORY. Lingüística [online]. 2012, vol.27, n.1, pp.18-46. ISSN 2079-312X.
This paper reports an analysis of the historical development of Latin consonants which originated the palatal segments in Brazilian Portuguese. Based on assumptions of the Autossegmental Theory and the Theory of Syllable, it is possible to provide evidence of the natural evolutionary process of BP by considering its earlier stages, including Latin. The analyzed data comprise historical grammars and other studies which had not approached evolutionary processes based on any phonological theory so far. Taking into account all phonological processes under study, the process of palatalization was chosen to be developed in this study, since it is the most productive regarding the evolution of consonants in our language. In this analysis, it is possible to identify its implementation, usually due to the presence of a palatal vocalic segment, which stresses the characteristic influence it has on some consonants, a phenomenon that still happens in BP nowadays, even if it takes place in the level of variation.
