MARTINELLI, Sylvia; STREHL, Adriana e MESA, Mariana. Study of the efficacy of different chelating agents to remove the smear layer. Odontoestomatología [online]. 2012, vol.14, n.19, pp.52-63. ISSN 1688-9339.
The use of chelators as irrigants, previous to the topic medication and obturation, is relevant to achieve a right cleaning and the gutta-percha and cement fitting to the canal's wall. The aim of this research was to evaluate and compare in vitro the smear layer cleaning and removal ability from the canal walls and dentinal tubules, after the instrumentation, using different irrigants. During the final irrigation, NaOCI, EDTA 17%, Quelant (EDTA commercial product) and citric acid 10% and 25% were applied. Next the crowns were cut and the roots were divided up “longitudinally” and examined in their three thirds using a scanning electron microscope. Results showed that NaOCI was not enough to completely eliminate the smear layer. The groups which contained a combination of NaOCI with a chelating agent showed different rates of cleaning. With the Quelant and Citric Acid in both concentrations, the results were satisfactory
