An analytic clinico-epidemiologic, transversal study has been conducted on 401 individuals from 0 to 14 years old, divided in two random samples from Instituto del Niño y Adolescente del Uruguay (INAU) and Centro de Asistencia del Sindicato Médico del Uruguay (CASMU). The main purpose was to find out the prevalence of bucal mucous disease in 401 patients. Other variables explored were gender, the age influence, mucosal localization, the socio-economic-cultural status and to establish a relative frequency in disease categories as well as comparison of the results with similar reports fromother investigators. A total prevalence was 32.9%; 36.8% in CASMU and 29% in INAU. Age and gender did not discriminate any significative difference.Different groups of lesionswere considered: traumatic, developmental, infectious, allergic and inmunologic, overgrowth, idiopathic and related to smoking habits.
