Abstract

ROTEMBERG WILF, Enrique  and  SMAISIK FRYDMAN, Karinna. Manifestaciones periodontales de los estados fisiológicos de la mujer. Odontoestomatología [online]. 2009, vol.11, n.13, pp.16-26. ISSN 1688-9339.

The sex steroid hormones play a role in reproductive endocrinology and can contribute in the functional regulation of many tisues. In the presence of plaque-associated inflamatory changes these hormones influence the beginning and progression of periodontal disease. The sex steroid hormones in females are not enough by themselves to produce gingival changes. They are involved in the homeostasis of the periodontium and can modify the periodontal responses in the action of the plaque over the periodontium tissues, indirectly contributed to the periodontal disease. The main sex steroid hormones with these effects are estrogens and progesterone

Keywords : gingival diseases; estrogens; progesterone; menstrual cycle; pregnancy; menopause.
