Abstract

PAPIC DOMINGUEZ, Katia. Types of internal organizational communication in municipal educational facilities in Chile. Cuad. Investig. Educ. [online]. 2019, vol.10, n.1, pp.63-83. ISSN 1510-2432.  https://doi.org/10.18861/cied.2019.10.1.2881.

The current trends of globalization in the information and communication society have influence on schools and professionals engaged in education. This global context strengthens substantial changes in the manner of managing the educational organizations. In educational facilities, communication constitutes a function of school management. Therefore, at municipal educational facilities, the internal organizational communication is seen as a function that entails educational improvement and quality assurance.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the types of internal organizational communication that are applied between managing personnel and teachers in the coordination of duties, oriented to the achievement of goals in managing the schools of municipal educational facilities in Chile.

In the research that gave rise to this paper, a methodology based on a combined approach of exploratory and descriptive nature was applied, for a sample of 22 municipal educational facilities. The selection criteria are concerned with those providing nursery and/or elementary and/or secondary education to children and young people under the management of Education Director’s Office and the Department of Education in the urban or rural areas in the boroughs of Pudahuel and La Cisterna effective in year 2015.

The methodology was implemented in its quantitative phase through a survey covering 40 % of managing officers and 40 % of teachers, having received 246 questionnaires that were answered. In the qualitative phase, the methodology applied consisted on an in-depth interview to 2 directors of Municipal Education Management. Both tools were designed by the stakeholders.

The results of the study show that the managing officers preferably use formal, downwards, horizontal and upwards communication in order to coordinate teachers in the development of works oriented to the achievement of institutional goals. It can be concluded that the use of these types of communication enables the coordination of work between managing officers and teachers in the management processes of the educational organization.
