CAVIERES-FERNANDEZ, Eduardo  e  URRUTIA, Carlos. Forming citizens: common good, teachers and student mobilizations in Chile. Cuad. Investig. Educ. [online]. 2017, vol.8, n.2, pp.61-78. ISSN 1510-2432.  https://doi.org/10.18861/cied.2017.8.2.2682.

The present study explores the conceptions of secondary school History teachers on the notion of common good, and their relationship with civic education and the student demonstrations and mobilizations that have been taking place in Chile during the last years. For such purposes, group interviews were conducted with 23 secondary school history teachers in five cities located throughout Chile. Following the results, and considering the study’s theoretical framework based on an understanding of the common good that underscores its relationship with civil society, the authors of the present work bring forth the discussion that, despite certain limitations -aggravated by the lack of institutional support- those teachers’ perspectives on the common good -which they try to communicate to their students through their teaching practices- are focused on the well-being of society. According to such perspectives, along with acknowledging the contributions of student mobilizations to the civil participation in the country’s issues -particularly among students- they also value that such mobilizations help them engage in the topic of the common good, generally missing in the school curriculum. Due to the exploratory nature of the study, the authors thereof suggest a series of research questions that should be developed in future studies in order to analyze in depth the findings presented in this study.
