Abstract

RODRIGUEZ PASCUAL, Leonor Patricia  and  MARTINEZ ROSILLO, Víctor Manuel. Effectiveness of group coaching on the development of self-regulated learning in engineering students. Cuad. Investig. Educ. [online]. 2015, vol.6, n.1, pp.71-88. ISSN 1510-2432.

Present times, with such fast developments in information, science and technology spheres force engineering professionals to develop skills that enable them to act efficiently and properly in their fields of work. The self-regulated learning ability will help them cope with the constant updating their professional life demands. While at university, this skill will allow them a better academic performance and avoid academic failure. The goal of the present research was to evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of a coaching program, applied to 25 third-level students of pharmaceutical engineering, along a twelve-session program through the development of the components of self-regulated learning. Based on many tests published in scientific literature, a special test was designed -named TMAAR, its acronym in Spanish- and used for evaluating several components of abilities and skills such as the use of learning strategies, self-efficacy, goal orientation, helplessness, environment and behavior management, as well as the search for and learning of information, both before and after the implementation of the coaching program (pre-test and post-test). In addition, a qualitative assessment of skills and abilities was carried out, using session dossiers and field notes. On the statistics viewpoint, results showed (t (25) = -4.553, p<0.05) that the coaching program designed was able to develop the skill and ability of self-regulated learning of the components there analyzed.

Keywords : Self-regulated learning; learning strategies; helplessness; environment management; search of information; self-efficacy; goal orientation; training program; coaching.
