Abstract

ANDRADA, Damián. The chaqueo of public opinión. Journalistic coverage of the 2019 coup in Bolivia. Inmediac. Comun [online]. 2022, vol.17, n.2, pp.98-130.  Epub Dec 01, 2022. ISSN 1510-5091.  https://doi.org/10.18861/ic.2022.17.2.3239.

The article carries out a content analysis of journalistic coverage, affective polarization and the presence of fake news on social networks during the coup that took place in Bolivia in 2019. To this end, the metaphor of chaqueo, a traditional agricultural technique based on slashing, turning and burning, is used to reflect on the role of certain media discourses in the overthrow of a democratically elected government and the mechanisms of legitimation for the arrival of a de facto government. From an interdisciplinary approach, media phenomena are analyzed that, according to the evidence gathered, deployed different types of discourses and resources in order to pierce the democratic order: the narrative of fraud in political cartoons, the attack on journalists through social networks, the various attempts at censorship and the promotion of self-censorship, the use of press headlines with a strong identity and partisan bias, the media justification of repression and the viralization of false news.

Keywords : Bolivia; political communication; social networks; fake news; polarization.
