Abstract

CELEDON BORQUEZ, GUSTAVO. The political-ontological problem of the digital image: The legacy of essay cinema as a form of subjective resistance. Inmediac. Comun [online]. 2021, vol.16, n.1, pp.135-157.  Epub June 01, 2021. ISSN 1510-5091.  https://doi.org/10.18861/ic.2021.16.1.3003.

The digital image, when approached from the artistic or cinematographic prism, requires crossing the barriers that delimit the audiovisual to a specific artistic practice and consider the socio-political and even ontological problem that it poses today. This problem consists of a de-subjectivation process imposed by digital discourse. In this regard, three important theses lead this writing. In the first place, the digital image is thought as a presentation or interface of a world structured by language, the latter being the true operator of the de-subjectivation processes. This implies, secondly, that subjectivation processes are possible in the audiovisual work to the extent that they can subvert the digital image, that is, separate it from its code. Third, an analytical look indicates that the tradition of the essay film is fundamental to understand this work of subjective subversion of the image in this digital age since its main axes are the commitment to subjectivation and resistance to language, coding and classification.

Keywords : digital image; ideology; language; subjectivity; film essay.
