Montevideo and the banda oriental had an educational system that is interesting and still little known but worth studying. The master craftsman taught his technical knowledgement to his apprentices. The schoolmaster mechanically taught his pupils reading, writing and calculating towards future social functions fulfillment. The early military and navy academies had the aim of the becoming youngsters into engineers and marines because society had an urgent need of them. The Philosophy and Theology professorships were aimed to keep Greco-Roman and Humanist cultures. Masters and institutions contributed to the formation of an eclectic intellectual thought that was marked by a constant desire of social overcoming
