Abstract

MONREAL, Susana. The project of a Catholic University in the sixties in Uruguay: the debate within the church. Pág. Educ. [online]. 2012, vol.5, n.1, pp.97-113. ISSN 1688-7468.

In the framework of a growing economic and social crisis in Uruguay, when the victory of the so-called Partido Nacional in the national elections of 1958 seemed to create favourable conditions, new Catholic initiatives in the field of high level (tertiary) education appeared in Uruguay. From a Catholic viewpoint, it consisted of a new try to counteract the laicism which characterized education and social life. However, the project (or projects) coming from the Catholic University awoke great debates within the very core of the Bishops Hierarchy. Since the beginning, the idea showed the support of the Apostolic Nunciature. The support of the Uruguayan Church was not clear, and a time of inner analysis and discussion started at that opportunity.

Keywords : University; High level (tertiary) education; Catholic Church; Uruguay.
