Abstract

LASA, Carlos Daniel. Education, the catholic church and a new version of secularism. Pág. Educ. [online]. 2012, vol.5, n.1, pp.37-53. ISSN 1688-7468.

Firstly, this paper analyzes Habermas's concept of new secularism and its effects on the field of education. It reveals the relationship between rationalism and this updated version of secularism and the contradiction that lies at the very starting point of rationalism: its foundation not on reason but on arbitrariness. Thus rationalism needs to keep an iron grip on thought while banning all considerations on the ultimate questions. In consequence, schools, as a product of this secularism, are completely taken by immediate concerns which deprive men of a genuine culture. Secondly, the paper presents the powerlessness that lies in the consciousness of modern Catholics to reestablish the connection between today´s man with such ultimate questions

Keywords : Rationalism; Neolaicism; school; Totalitarianism; Catholic Church.
