Abstract

OLIVEIRA, Leonita Chagas de; COSTA, Julio Cezar Albuquerque da  and  FREIRES, Leogildo Alves. Academic stress and ill-being among university professors during remote teaching in the COVID-19 pandemic. Psicol. Conoc. Soc. [online]. 2025, vol.15, n.1, e1519.  Epub Dec 01, 2025. The present study aimed to evaluate the relation between academic stress and psychological ill-being with socio-demographic variables, by using comparative, associative, and predictive models, aiming to investigate these phenomena among university teachers that adopted emergency remote teaching during the COVID-19 pandemics in Brazil. To this end, a quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational method was adopted, in which 257 university professors participated, with an average age of 45.41 years (SD=11.02). The results pointed to a positive flag between fear of COVID-19 and trait anxiety and academic stress. Regarding academic stress and perceived stress, women presented higher levels compared to men, while the presence of children in the daily life of university professors reduces levels of academic stress. However, teachers with psychiatric disorders and a previous diagnosis of COVID-19 had increased levels of trait anxiety. And teachers with psychiatric disorders showed increased levels of state anxiety and academic stress. Therefore, it is essential to create strategies so that teachers can deal with the stress and discomfort generated in the academic environment. Therefore, it is believed that the present study makes significant contributions to carrying out specific actions in the university context, seeking to promote debates and improvements in the mental health and quality of life of teachers.
