Abstract

SILVA, Aline Ribeiro da; YUNES, Maria Angela Mattar; LOUREIRO, Celia Regina Nonato da Silva  and  ACHKAR, Ana Maria Nunes El. “Favelados helping favelados": Expressions of Community Resilience during the Covid-19 pandemic. Psicol. Conoc. Soc. [online]. 2025, vol.15, n.1, e05110.  Epub Dec 01, 2025. ISSN 1688-7026.  https://doi.org/10.26864/pcs.v15.n1.10.

The aim of the study was to understand the indicators of community resilience, coping strategies and prevention practices adopted by residents of a North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, with and without leadership representation in the community, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The specific objectives were to evaluate the impact of this situation on quality of life and propose effective interventions for future crises. The sample consisted of 7 adult participants, 3 women and 4 men, aged between 18 and 90 years. Data was collected through ecological engagement with systematic naturalistic observations, field diaries and semi-structured interviews. The analysis followed the principles of Grounded Theory. The results showed two main axes: a) Residents' feelings and perceptions about the pandemic, such as fear of the consequences of the disease and b) Common coping strategies during the pandemic, such as creativity, networks of solutions, collaboration and solidarity and the search for family support. Solidarity was identified as one of the elements that most helped residents cope with the consequences of COVID-19. The community's ability to turn crisis into opportunity stands out. It is expected that the reflections on community resilience in a pandemic situation contribute to the development of research in similar situations and offer support to the creation of inclusive public policies, as well as challenge stigmatizing views.
