Abstract

DUBINI, Patricia Mónica. Life between two worlds. Youth selfness setting up and the role of the other in a vulnerable social context. Psicol. Conoc. Soc. [online]. 2020, vol.10, n.2, pp.21-37.  Epub Aug 01, 2020. ISSN 1688-7026.  https://doi.org/10.26864/pcs.v10.n2.2.

This work goal is to inquire into the role of other people in youth selfness setting up in a social context of vulnerability. It aims at identifying different social relationships and the sense of membership that have been shaping the person’s selfness throughout his life span. The importance of the others in the early personal changing processes and the personal design of future plans have also been analyzed. As to the method, the personal life narration with a qualitative approach was used. Ten young people- aged 18 to 22- living in both a Social-Working Qualification Center and a SocioEducational Imprisonment Center (Córdoba, Argentina) were soundly interviewed to frame their life narrations. Two emerging categories were identified from their stories: a) The other one in our own life story b) The other one and change prospect; prospective horizons. Out of the analysis of their life stories, the other one in the selfness setting up is crucial: On the one hand, the absence or the threatening presence of a person badly affects the process of selfness setting up; on the other hand, supportive attitudes from others turn out to be a source of appreciation; promotes changing processes that avoid the mere repetition of the personal story and promotes the possibility of prospective horizons.

Keywords : Youth; selfness; role of the other one; social vulnerability.
