Abstract

DUARTE-RECALDE, Liliana Rocío. Consequences of a «ossified» party system: General elections in Paraguay 2023. Rev. Urug. Cienc. Polít. [online]. 2024, vol.33, e401.  Epub Dec 01, 2024. ISSN 0797-9789.  https://doi.org/10.26851/rucp.33.1.

The 2023 general elections in Paraguay confirmed the electoral dominance of the Colorado Party (anr) in the nation, diverging from the common regional pattern of penalizing sitting administrations during the covid-19 epidemic. The governing party achieved a nationwide victory and strengthened its hold on departmental governorships at the subnational level. This underscores the continued existence of a political structure that is seen as «ossified», characterized by the dominance of established parties that have been at the forefront of elections for many years. This article aims to analyze the results of the 2023 elections in light of these characteristics of the Paraguayan political system, describing the distribution of electoral preferences both at the national and departmental levels.

Keywords : elections; political system; political parties; democracy; Paraguay.
