Resumen

GONZALEZ SCANDIZZI, Julián. Mouffe versus Laclau. The (dis)continuities between left populism and populism without adjectives. Rev. Urug. Cienc. Polít. [online]. 2023, vol.32, n.1, pp.79-104.  Epub 01-Jun-2023. ISSN 0797-9789.  https://doi.org/10.26851/rucp.32.1.4.

Contemporary discussion about populism lies the question about its possible articulations with democracy. Certain leftist political and intellectual expressions understand populism as a valuable resource for democracy radicalization. In this way, Chantal Mouffe advocates a left populism that is proclaimed in continuity with Ernesto Laclau’s theory. This paper questions this continuity by emphasizing some important differences between both conceptualizations. After reconstructing their respective paths and intellectual concerns, it will be argued that Mouffe’s left populism adopts an agonistic democracy understanding that is hardly compatible with formalist-ontological populism theory developed by Laclau.

Palabras clave : populism; antagonism; agonism; democracy; left.
