Resumen

MOREIRA, Constanza. The threat of democracy: an itinerary from Platón to Rancière. Rev. Urug. Cienc. Polít. [online]. 2023, vol.32, n.1, pp.31-51.  Epub 01-Jun-2023. ISSN 0797-9789.  https://doi.org/10.26851/rucp.32.1.2.

This article explores the rejection of democracy as a form of government from classical to modern political theory, and how this rejection has resulted in more or less elitist versions that tend to distance the universality of the condition of electors in relation to the restrictions that operate on those who are elect. Versions of restricted republicanism, from Aristotle to Machiavelli, are explored as a solution to the problems of demagogy, and which illustrate the debates on populism. The revolutionary potential of the ideal of political equality, as formulated by Aristotle, Tocqueville, and Rousseau, is also explored. Finally, the work closes with Rancière’s debate in relation to Plato, about the «hatred of democracy».

Palabras clave : democracy political theory; populism; Aristotle; Plato; Rancière.
