Abstract

SANCHEZ MARTINEZ, José Said. Partisan Variables and Subnational Public Debt in Mexico. Rev. Urug. Cienc. Polít. [online]. 2017, vol.26, n.2, pp.127-146. ISSN 0797-9789.  https://doi.org/https://doi.org/10.26851/rucp.v26n2.6.

The subnational public debt has increased in the last years. Nevertheless, many studies do not consider if the partisan variables have an effect on the debt. This is important because the political plurality is a basic element of the mexican subnational politics. Using a panel data analysis, the aim of this paper is to show ifthe political party in government, the partisan composition in congress, the vertical divided government and the political budget cycle have an effect on the public debt. We find that the evidence does not support sometheoretical arguments.

Keywords : public debt; partisan variables; subnational politics.
