Abstract

ROBLES FARIAS, Claudia. The challenges of social protection in a high-income country: the Chilean case. Rev. Urug. Cienc. Polít. [online]. 2013, vol.22, n.spe, pp.94-112. ISSN 1688-499X.

Since 1990, Chile has consolidated a model of social development that has led to poverty reduction and the improvement in people’s living conditions. Social policy, and specially, social protection has played an important part in this achievement. Acknowledging that inequality is still an obstacle to development in the country, this paper explores the progress, gaps and challenges ahead for social protection to contribute to enlarging equal access to welfare. The article concludes that this will demand the implementation of a group of measures with a higher redistributive potential. This analysis indicates a series of aspects that other countries might consider before adopting these policies and evaluating their transformative role in the social structure

Keywords : social protection; Chile; equality; welfare.
