LORENZONI, Miguel  and  PEREZ, Verónica. Changes and continuities of the left in Uruguay: an analysis of the Broad Front manifestos, 1971-2009. Rev. Urug. Cienc. Polít. [online]. 2013, vol.22, n.1, pp.81-102. ISSN 1688-499X.

Abstract: From quantitative content analysis of the Frente Amplio programs, this paper seeks to describe the position of the party in terms of left and right in the historical evolution as well as the issues that were emphasized in each election. The paper provides new evidence to the thesis that explains the Frente Amplio’s electoral victory in the 2004 elections as a result of ideological moderation of its manifestos. Quantitative analysis of the Frente Amplio programs, in light of the votes obtained by the party in each election, from 1971-2009, allow to appreciate a clear partisan adaptation strategy, according to which the most radical postulates of the old programs was not functional to capture an electorate concentrated in the center of the ideological spectrum and become in ruling party.
