Abstract

CORVALAN, Javier  and  ROMAN, Marcela. The permanence of low-performance schools in the Chilean educational quasi market. Rev. Urug. Cienc. Polít. [online]. 2012, vol.21, n.1, pp.43-65. ISSN 1688-499X.

Abstract: We analyze the willingness to change schools in families who send their children to chronically underperforming schools in Chile. By applying more than 1000 questionnaires in five urban districts, each with alternative schools, we conclude that families are highly satisfied with schools; have few criticisms to them; are unaware of the school’s SIMCE scores; and are unlikely to change school based on their dissatisfaction with the institution. The conclusion is that these schools are not prone to change due to families’ unsatisfaction, which leads us to question the basis of Chile’s regulation of its educational system

Keywords : Educational (quasi) market; educational regulation mode; Chile.
