Abstract

COX, Cristián. Politics and educational policies in Chile 1990-2010. Rev. Urug. Cienc. Polít. [online]. 2012, vol.21, n.1, pp.13-43. ISSN 1688-499X.

The article examines the limits set on educational policies by political power, the ideologies of actors represented in the relationship government/opposition in the political-institutional arena, as well as the predominant dynamics between social movement and political response in education. Considering “politics” as a framework, the article analyzes the evolution of educational policies in Chile in the period 1990-2010 (equivalent to four terms of office of the same center-leftist coalition) and their impact on coverage, quality and equity of the school system, and also considers Chilean society’ attitude towards education and its political effects. Finally, the paper refers to some structural results that educational policies did not look for
