Abstract: Under what circumstances and with what arguments do the actors of a democratic political system incorporate, justify or reject the use of violence? The Uruguayan case in the sixties shows that in a context of confrontation and increasing deterioration of democratic institutions, a number of players integrated violence as one of the major issues of public debate and political action. With the aim of contributing to the construction of a set of analytical categories useful for the understanding of the outbreak and development of violence in political conflicts, this article reviews the main explanations available to understand these processes and its application to Uruguay.
