Abstract

SALVAT, Richard. POLITICAL CAREERS IN THE JUNTA DEPARTAMENTAL OF FLORIDA: INSTABILITY AND AMATEURISM. Rev. Urug. Cienc. Polít. [online]. 2009, vol.18, n.1, pp.193-215. ISSN 1688-499X.

Abstract: This paper studies the political careers in Florida, analyzing data about the members of the Junta Departamental de Florida between 1985 and 2005. The district magnitude is a relevant variable to explain the career pattern on the local political system. The study also shows that Florida has an unstable political class, with high rates of withdrawal of the legislative function, and low rates of reelection seekers. The weakness of the political system to maintain a stable legislative body, combined with the falling of education level of members of the Junta Departamenal, shape a political situation characterized by a low professionalization of politics and a widespread amateurism to the policy making process.

Keywords : Political Careers; Political Parties; Local Political System.
