Abstract

PINEIRO RODRIGUEZ, Rafael. EL SUEÑO DE LA LISTA PROPIA: LOS DILEMAS DE COORDINACIÓN ELECTORAL POST-REFORMA DE 1997. Rev. Urug. Cienc. Polít. [online]. 2007, vol.16, n.1, pp.51-71. ISSN 1688-499X.

Abstract This article looks at the electoral coordination dilemmas of Uruguayan party factions in the election of October 2004. The way that Representatives and Senators are elected -inside political partys (between factions)- is featured as a mixed electoral system, and the effects of this kind of systems on the number of agents -in the different level of competition- are studied. In a second part, there is a detailed description of restrictions and opportunities that the electoral system provides to political agents. The electoral data analyses shows how factionalization levels are strongly influenced by the electoral performance of the party, and their distribution over constituencies. The successful parties with strong presence in the biggest constituencies gives more opportunities to factions, than parties with less amount of voters, which at the same time, are concentrated around the small ones.
