Abstract

ESTRADES, Carmen. OPINIÓN PÚBLICA Y MERCOSUR: CONOCIMIENTO Y APOYO DE LOS URUGUAYOS AL PROCESO DE INTEGRACIÓN REGIONAL. Rev. Urug. Cienc. Polít. [online]. 2006, vol.15, n.1, pp.107-127. ISSN 1688-499X.

Abstract: The issue of democracy and participation within regional integration processes has acquired big relevance in the last few years. This study focuses on the relationship between public opinion and MERCOSUR. Specifically, it analyses how much do Uruguayans know about the integration process, and estimates the probability of supporting MERCOSUR and voting for it in a hypothetical referendum. Information from the ISSP Survey for year 2004 in Uruguay was used. The conclusion is that there exist an information deficit from decision-taking institutions towards citizenship, and that a low knowledge level leads to a non-support of the integration process.

Keywords : Public Opinion; MERCOSUR; Democratic Deficit.
