ARTESE, Joaquín; LODOLA, Victoria y GONZALEZ, Sebastián. Prevalence of hemotropic Mycoplasmas in felines evaluated by cytopathological study of capillary blood smears at the FCV-UBA Teaching Hospital. Veterinaria (Montev.) [online]. 2025, vol.61, n.223, e202. Epub 01-Jun-2025. ISSN 0376-4362. https://doi.org/10.29155/vet.61.223.5.
The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of hemotropic Mycoplasmas infection in felines through the cytopathological study of capillary blood smears at the Teaching Hospital (FCV-UBA). A retrospective analysis was carried out on 1002 felines that attended the hospital between May 2019 and May 2023, from which a complete blood count and a smear were requested to detect hemoparasites. The results showed that 5 % of the cats analyzed (55 cases) were diagnosed as positive for Mycoplasmas, while 95 % (947 cases) were negative. The study concludes that cytological diagnosis is a valid tool for the detection of Mycoplasmas infection in felines, especially in the case of large varieties that are associated with greater pathogenicity. However, the need to use more sensitive and specific techniques, such as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), is pointed out.
