CASTRO, Oscar. Checklist of helminth parasites of domestic swine and equines from Uruguay. Veterinaria (Montev.) [online]. 2025, vol.61, n.223, e201.  Epub 01-Jun-2025. ISSN 0376-4362.  https://doi.org/10.29155/vet.61.223.3.

Fourteen helminth species have been identified parasitizing the domestic pig in Uruguay: a trematode, three metacestodes and ten nematodes. Compared to the “classic” helminth fauna of domestic swine, this inventory appears to be relatively complete, as only two nematode species (Ascarops strongylina and Stephanurus dentatus) are absent. Moreover, it includes two species with zoonotic potential due to the ingestion of raw or undercooked pork’s meat: the metacaestode of Taenia solium, Cysticercus cellulosae, of very low incidence in the country, and the nematode Trichinella spiralis, last identified in pigs of Uruguay in 1924. On the other hand, eighteen taxa of parasitic helminths have been recorded in the horse: one trematode, two adult cestodes and fifteen nematodes. Unlike what happens with the pig, the catalogue of horse helminths still seems to be very incomplete in our country, particularly with regard to the nematodes of the subfamily Cyathostominae (Strongylidae), of which only three species have been diagnosed in Uruguay, compared to more than twenty registered in neighboring countries. There are also a few records of helminths of donkey, among them the lung nematode Dictyocaulus arnfieldi, and of mule. The trematode Fasciola hepatica has been diagnosed in pigs, horses and donkeys from Uruguay.
