Abstract

MENENDEZ, Josemaría et al. Diagnosis and therapy of Hepatocarcinoma: update of the topic and the internist’s role. Arch. Med Int [online]. 2014, vol.36, n. 2, pp.60-65. ISSN 0250-3816.

Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common malignant liver tumor, the 5th most prevalent worldwide and the 3rd leading cause of death from cancer. Over 90% of cases are associated with cirrhosis, the incidence in this population is 3 to 5%, been the leading cause of death in this population. It is expected that the incidence would increase in the next 2 decades. In recent years new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies have been developed, that have dramatically changed the treatment strategies in early stages of the disease. As this tumor develops primarily in cirrhotic patients, where the global management of the patient is crucial, the Internist plays a fundamental role in the proper approach. Tasks such as prevention, surveillance, early diagnosis and multi and interdisciplinary approach, in the different stages of the disease, are just some of the most relevant aspects. The interaction between physician and Hepatologist is essential, working together to define the different actions in pre-and post-treatment phases.
