PARODI, Carolina; LLAMBI, María L.; BARROS, Mary L.  y  ESTEVES, Elba I.. Measurement of carbon monoxide during tobacco smoking cessation: lessons learned. Arch. Med Int [online]. 2013, vol.35, n.2, pp.33-37. ISSN 0250-3816.

ABSTRACT: Arch Med Interna 2013 - 35(2):33-37 Introduction: Measurement of exhaled CO is a reliable biomarker of tobacco consumption. Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) assesses nicotine dependence. Objectives: To assess association between exhaled CO and degree of nicotine dependence. Secondly, to assess the frequency of self-reported smoking abstinence which is not verified exhaled CO. Material and Methods: Retrospective and analytical study. Chi2 test was applied to prove association between CO and FTND, Spearman correlation test to evaluate the relationship between CO and cigarettes per day (cpd), Student t test to compare means of cpd. Results: n: 137 patients. The initial exhaled CO measurement showed significant association with the FTND score. 61 patients reported abstinence, in 34/61, it was confirmed through CO levels while in 7/61 it was not. Conclusions: The association between exhaled CO and the FTND score is significant. It is useful to corroborate abstinence through biomarkers.
