VEROCAY, María Cristina; REBORI, Anabella and VELASCO, Mary. The meaning of Proteinuria in children and adolescents. Arch. Med Int [online]. 2012, vol.34, n.1, pp.3-3. ISSN 0250-3816.
ABSTRACT: Arch Med Interna 2012 - 34(1):12-16 Introduction: Persistent proteinuria in children and adolescents is an indicator of chronic kidney disease; it is a factor that causes it to progress, as well as a cardiovascular risk factor, as is the case in adults. However, children and adolescents may have transient proteinurias resulting from benign changes that need be discriminated, as well as other etiologies that have to be ruled out. Objectives: Diagnostic approach of proteinuria in children and adolescents and discussion on the adequacy of the conclusions reached by the Consensus on Proteinurias, as applied to this age group. Material and Method: Search, evaluation and summary of the evidence published in literature concerning the pathophysiology and detection of proteinuria in children and adolescents. Results are presented as a diagnostic algorithm. Results and Conclusions: Although proteinuria in children and adolescents has the same meaning as in adults, its etiology may differ. By adapting the units in which the results are reported, the recommendations issued by the Consensus on Proteinurias are also applicable to this population
