The herpes viridae family includes six neurotropic viruses (Types 1 and 2 Herpes simplex, Varicella-zoster, Cytomegalovirus, Type 6 Human Herpes virus and Epstein-Barr virus) well known for their ability to cause encephalitis in children and adults. The encephalitis produced by Type 1 Herpes simplex is the best known; the rest offer a number of relatively unknown factors in terms of their clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic manifestations that have not been clarified yet. Molecular biology techniques applied to the CSF have expanded our knowledge in that regard. The paper gives an updated overview of the matter, based on a literature review and a modest contribution presenting our experience, and highlighting the differences and similarities between these encephalitis
