ABSTRACT The benzodiazepines (BZD) are the most prescripted psychotropic drugs. They have efficacy in anxiety and insomnia treatment and in other indications. Their safety profile is better than the barbiturates. This work objective is to promote the rational use of BDZ, based on efficacy and safety criteria, determining risk populations. The pharmacology profile of BZD and the principal implications in the clinical practice is actualized. Within the associated risks in the use of BZD we highlight: falls, cognitive disorders, use in advance age population, addiction. We make emphasize in the precautions linked to the chronic consumption of BDZ, circumstance in which its efficacy is not proven yet. We highlight the early appearance of tolerance and dependence and the complications in its retirement after prolonged consumption. The rational use of these drugs is promoted for short periods and recognizing risk populations.
