Resumen

CORDOVA, Victoria; LOPEZ, Maynés; ARTETA, Zaida  y  CORREA, Fernando. HIV-AIDS in the Medical Clinic: description of a hospital population. Arch. Med Int [online]. 2009, vol.31, n.4, pp.99-102. ISSN 0250-3816.

There are currently 40 million people infected with HIV. In Uruguay, until October 2007, the total number of HIV-AIDS is 10,324. The purpose of this study is to determine the number of HIV-AIDS patients and the most important data regarding the characteristics of the disease that determined their hospitalization in the Clinical Medicine Department at the University Hospital between 1 January 2004 to December 31 of 2007. This descriptive and observational study analyzes a total of 116 patients, of whom 60.3% were male and 39.7% were women. The mean age was 37.5 years. The most frequent reasons for admission were respiratory (44%) and neurological (24.1%) symptoms. A quarter of the patients knew their viral load and/or CD4 count, reflecting the irregular control of the disease. Most patients do not receive antiretroviral treatment.

Palabras clave : HIV; AIDS; Related opportunistic infections.
