Dyspepsia is a highly prevalent condition, and it is a frequent cause for seeking care; it has a significant toll on the patients’ personal, work, health and on economy. Currently defined as a symptom or a group of symptoms, physicians consider it to have a gastroduodenal origin, and it is classified as not investigated, organic or functional. When dyspepsia is organic, treatment is specifically targeted to the cause of the symptoms. In the case of functional dyspepsia, the etiopathogenic factors involved are still obscure, and as a result there are no truly effective therapies to date. The available therapies are based on the various hypotheses proposed to explain the condition; there are several treatment choices, such as the acid secretion inhibitors, prokinetics, eradication of Helicobacter pylori, antacids and cytoprotective agents, antidepressants and medications acting on the visceral perception.
