BORGES, Lisandra y ANGELI DOS SANTOS, Acácia Aparecida. DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS AND SCHOOL PERFORMANCE: A STUDY OF BRAZILIAN CHILDREN. Cienc. Psicol. [online]. 2016, vol.10, n.2, pp.189-197. ISSN 1688-4094.
The present study was aimed at verifying the relation between depressive symptoms and school performance, indirectly measured by performance on reading comprehension and writing. The study involved 164 boys and 129 girls (N = 293), aged 7 to 11 years old (M = 9.19; SD = 0.97), from third to fifth grade of elementary school in two public schools of São Paulo’s countryside in Brazil. The research instruments were the Children Depression Inventory (CDI), two texts structured according to traditional patterns of Cloze technique and the Escala de Avaliação da Escrita (EAVE). The results revealed a negative and significant correlation between the scores. Children who had higher scores in CDI showed worse performance in reading comprehension and writing. No differences in CDI scores were found for age and gender variables
