BALVERDE, Mario. DETERIORO INTELECTUAL POSTOPERATORIO EN PACIENTES ANCIANOS. Anest Analg Reanim [online]. 2004, vol.19, n.2, pp.10-15. ISSN 1688-1273.
The objective of this prospective, randomized and simple blind study was to determine the incidence of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (PCD) in a population older than 65 years , whom underwent general anesthesia . We studied two groups one older and other younger than 65 years old, with 35 persons in each one; and applied to all of them the minimental state of Folstein test. When 24 points or less were obteined we considered a PCD. The test was performed in the preoperative period, and 12, 24 and 48 hours after surgery. We concluded that the incidence of PCD is similar with other international statistics. The diagnosis was made with the test only in the older group. We point out if the test could be useful as a predictive tool because neither of the patients of both groups had clinical dysfunction according to the test.
