Abstract

GRUNBERG, Gustavo  and  SOLE, Luis. EVALUACIÓN DE UN MÉTODO DE SEDO - ANALGESIA PARA PUNCIÓN BIÓPSICA PROSTÁTICA TRANSRECTAL. Anest Analg Reanim [online]. 2004, vol.19, n.1, pp.06-12. ISSN 1688-1273.

SUMMARY Transrectal ultrasound - guided, prostate biopsy (TUPB) is a diagnostic test associated with discomfort and pain for the patient. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the anesthetic management using Thiopental and Fentanyl for ambulatory TUPB. Sixty patients undergoing TUPB were evaluated during this study. All patients received an initial dose of Fentanyl 0.5-1 m g/kg, and titrated doses of Thiopental to obtain deep sedation, and then TUPB was performed. RESULTS: The procedure was performed in 57 patients, 2 patients were postponed due to rectal disease and the third patient was postponed after he was sedated because the transducer couldn’t be placed. Total dose of Thiopental needed was 265 ± 88 mg (mean ± standard deviation). Average time for the prostate biopsy was 7 ± 2 minutes, and total time since patient arrival till home discharge was 58 ± 8 minutes. Adverse effects were mild, brief, and allowed early discharge. CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that sedo - analgesic technique for TUPB with Thiopental - Fentanyl is simple, effective and safe for ambulatory anesthesia and outside operating room.
