QUAGLIATA, Valentina; ACOSTA, Agustina y ALVAREZ, Mariela. Use of atenolol for the treatment of infantile hemangioma: clinical case of interest. Arch. Pediatr. Urug. [online]. 2025, vol.96, n.2, e314. Epub 01-Dic-2025. ISSN 0004-0584. https://doi.org/10.31134/ap.96.31.
Infantile hemangiomas (IH) are the most common benign tumors of childhood. They typically appear within the first weeks of life and follow a natural course of proliferation and involution. Most IHs resolve spontaneously without intervention; however, a small number of cases with complications or located in high-risk areas may require treatment. Propranolol is the first-line therapy, but some patients experience undesirable side effects during treatment (bronchial hyperactivity, hypoglycemia, sleep disturbances). Atenolol has emerged as a therapeutic alternative with a favorable safety and efficacy profile for patients who develop adverse effects to propranolol.
We report the case of an infant with IH successfully treated with atenolol.
