Abstract

CARBAJAL, Beatriz; MAYANS, Eduardo; RUFO, Rita  and  SILVERA, Fernando. Guidelines for the insertion of umbilical catheters. Arch. Pediatr. Urug. [online]. 2016, vol.87, n.3, pp.263-268. ISSN 0004-0584.

Given the need and relevance of this technique for the insertion of central lines in newborns we propose guidelines for the insertion of umbilical vein catheters in newborn units. Also, we point out those cases in which insertion of these catheter is not recommended. Umbilical catheterization is a rapid maneuver to access the vascular system and arteries, and it is safe if it follows the recommended guidelines and and if the proper care is taken during insertion and maintenance, using the material suggested for such procedure and the newborn’s weight. Manipulation to modify its position needs to be avoided due to the possibility of bleeding and the risk of infection. This is practically non-existent if the guidelines for catheter insertion distances are observed, and if catheters are secured by placing a purse string. In this way migration with the potential catheter migration and loss of the line is also avoided. Bleeding and infection are the most frequent complications in the use of catheters, both venous and artery. We emphasize on the importance of removing catheters once the alternative way is obtained.
