MOROSINI, Fabiana et al. Hemophilia: analysis of consultations in the Department of Pediatric Emergency, CHPR. Arch. Pediatr. Urug. [online]. 2014, vol.85, n.4, pp.220-225. ISSN 1688-1249.

Summary  Introduction: according to the National Programme on Integral Care of Haemophilia and other bleeding disorders (PAIHEC) there are 50 hemophiliac children in Uruguay. These children frequently visit the emergency departments (ED), where their management can represent a challenge for the emergency physician. To know the characteristics of this population and why they visit the ED is essential to plan strategies to improve the quality of care. Objective: to describe the characteristics of hemophiliac children and why they visit the ED - Centro Hospitalario Pereira Rossell (CHPR). Methods: retrospective, descriptive study in the period 01/01/12 - 05/31/13. All the visits to the ED from haemophiliac children registered in DMT - CHPR were included. ED data-base and registers from DMT were used. Results: 31 patients were included. Age:1-16 y. 28/31 haemophilia A: 19 severe; 3/31 haemophilia B: 1 severe. 20/31 patients visited ED, total 46 visits. 16 bleeding episodes, 9 traumas, 21 other motives. 27 imagenological studies were performed. Factor replacement therapy was administered in 18 cases by hemotherapist. 19 cases were admitted to hospital, 17 in severe hemophiliacs (4 in intensive care units). No deaths occurred. Conclusions: hemophiliac children assisted in our Hospital frequently visited the ED in this period. Possibility of bleeding should always be suspected. Imagenological studies are frequently needed. Severe hemophiliacs presented more severely, were more frequently admitted and needed intensive care. Comprehensive care is needed for this patients working together with the hemotherapist.
