Introduction: there is few national data related to children and youth with life threatening conditions in need of PC, all of it proceeding from public services. The objective of this study was to know the prevalence and features of children discharged from Asociación Española (AE) in need of PC. Method: a descriptive, observational and retrospective study was done. It were included all patients younger than 19 discharged from 1/1 to 31/12/2011. It was considered condition in need of PC (INPC) those included in the ACT clasification, and probably in need of PC (PINPC) to newborns: severe preterms, with hipoxia-ischemia or postresucitated without sequelae at discharge. Results: 3,6% (114/3.157) (IC95% 2,95-4,25) of children discharged from AE were INPC or PINPC. They were: 26% in moderate care (MC), 35% in pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), 39% in neonatal unit (NU). Medium age: 1 year (1 day-18 years). More frequent conditions INPC: oncologic in MC, neurologic in PICU and genetic in UN. Among the PINPC prevailed prematurity. Medium hospitalization length: 11,5 days. At discharge 15% (17/114) had prothesis or medical devices. 11% (13/114) of the chidren included died, 10% in MC, 15% in PICU and 9% in UN. Conclusions: this is the first communication related with the epidemiologic features of children in need of PC from a private institution of the country. 3.6% of the children discharged from the AE in a year were in need or probably in need of PC. They came from all the areas of the institution, had a wide variety of conditions, 15% required prothesis at discharge and 11% died during the hospitalization
