Introduction: type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) is the most common chronic endocrine pediatric disease. It has a greater impact by the severity of it chronic complications. Among these complications are particularly relevant microvasculature involvement, causing retinopathy, neuropathy and nephropathy. These complications, although manifested in adulthood begin to develop in childhood. There are international standards for identification. Risk factors that favor its development are mentioned. Objectives: to determine the prevalence of microvascular complications in children and adolescents with DM1; assess whether international recommendations for the search are met; describe the presence of risk factors associated with their development. Methods: retrospective descriptive study, based on a review of medical records of patients younger than 15 years diagnosed with DM1, assisted in the Pereira Rossell Hospital in the period between 1/1/2000 and 31/12/2009. Results: during the reporting period 192 patients were identified, with a mean age at onset of 7,5 years, with an average of 5,8 years of evolution of DM1. 73,4% had poor metabolic control, almost 18% were overweight, 2,1% were obese, 22,6% had dyslipidemia, and 17% were sedentary. Albuminuria had been requested 39,6% and examination of the back of the eyes in 77% of those who should have been studied, according to international guidelines. No patient looking neuropathy. Diabetic nephropathy was diagnosed in 16% of those studied, all in their early stages. Retinopathy was identified in a patient. The risk factor was identified in them poor metabolic control. Conclusions: in this group of patients, the prevalence of nephropathy was high. Poor metabolic control was significantly associated with the development of nephropathy. International search criteria were fulfilled microangiopathy in very low percentages.
