BERNADA, Mercedes et al. Lesiones graves y fatales en niños y adolescentes uruguayos secundarias a siniestros de tránsito por motos: Estudio epidemiológico. Arch. Pediatr. Urug. [online]. 2013, vol.84, n.2, pp.91-100. ISSN 1688-1249.

Summary  Introduction: in middle-income countries, such as Uruguay, motorcycle drivers are an important part of those injured or killed in traffic accidents. Objective: to determine the number of children and adolescents who suffered accidents with motorcycles and: a) die or, b) were admitted to ICU / IC. Of the latter, describe the main lesions and features. Methodology: a descriptive, retrospective study from 1/7 to 31/12/2009. Sources of information: MSP, ICU/IC databases, death certificates, police reports and medical records. Results: in the six months studied: a) 20 children under 19 years old died, corresponding to 54% of deaths due to traffic accidents of the age range. 70% were male, all drivers or passengers. 16/20 died on public roads, the rest in ICU. At least 45% were not wearing helmets; b) 69 children under 19 years were admitted to ICU/IC (2.7% of all the causes of income / age), 26% were under 15, 71% male, most drivers or passengers. 91% suffered ECT and 87% polytrauma that involve 3 to 6 sectors. Injuries found: members 65%, chest 60%, facial 54%, abdomen 40%, pelvis 25%, coma 40% and shock 25%. 68% were not wearing a helmet. Data gaps were found in the documents analyzed. Conclusions: it is necessary to: 1) improve the quality of information on traffic accidents, 2) legislate on the appropriateness or otherwise of children on a motorcycle, and if applicable, the conditions of transfer, 3) conduct permanent road safety educational campaigns, as well as monitoring and penalty in case of non compliance with the law.
