Abstract

Summary  Introduction: acute lower respiratory infections constitute the first cause of hospitalization in pediatric ages in Uruguay; with a strong increase in the colder months. In 2011 the Winter Plan strategy was organized in the Central Hospital for the Armed Forces (HCFFAA), with the use of nebulizations with 3% Hypertonic Saline Solution. A descriptive prospective study was made to evaluate the clinical experience, including patients under 2 years of age in the first, second and third stages of bronchiolitis; in the period 1/07/2011 - 30/09/2011. Objectives: Evaluate the clinical response of 3% hypertonic saline solution, decreases length of hospitalization and readmission. Compare the results with other strategies. Results: 4.698 patients consulted in the Department of Pediatric Emergency, 127 went into the Winter Plan. The age was 6 m (1 m - 22 m) and 54.8% boys. The stay in emergency was 1 h 44 min (30 min - 10 h). Destination: discharge 65% and admission 35%. A reduction of the Tal score was achieved with a of 1,8 points at the end of the first hour of the proposed treatment. 45 patients went into the ward, 23/45 females, 38/45 term and 41/45 eutrophic. The amount of days in ward hospitalization was 3,4 days. There were no re-entries and 0 mortality. Conclusions: the stay of patients in the hospital was reduced by 22 h compared to other strategies. There were no readmissions. There was a greater registration of patients compares to the Winter plan 2010
