Abstract

Summary A ten year old child with 6 days of fever who later added severe headache and meningeal irritation signs is presented. He proceeded from a poor area of Montevideo, and was admitted at hospital in late summer. During the evolution he added: mental confusion, photophobia, inability to recognize parents or medical staff, obey simple commands, and arterial hypertension. 6 days after he spontaneously improved. IgM for St. Louis encephalitis in blood test was the only positive discovery. St. Louis encephalitis is transmitted by Culex genus mosquitoes. The virus belongs to the Flaviviridae family. No previous description of this disease was founded in the country
