Summary  Introduction: an investigation about motor development was carried out and it was assessed via evolutionary neurological exam. Aim: to study through the evolutionary neurological exam, the maturation of cerebellar signs, paratonia and the synkinesias in the child. Method: a cross-sectional study was performed, examining children ranging from 4 to 12 years of age, of both sexes, attending Montevideo State Schools, between October 2006 and May 2008. Results: 330 children were examined, 178 boys and 152 girls. The paratonia in the drop arm maneuver was present in 70% in the 4 year-old group and in 17% among the 11 year-olds. At the age of 7, 100% of children achieved static balance on one foot and 92.5% did so on one foot jump. The heel-toe alternation task was achieved by 96.2% of children aged 6. A 79% of children in the 7 year-old group achieved the metry in the finger to-nose test. The diadochokinesis in the hand pronation-supination task was achieved by 100% of children aged 6 and the puppets maneuver by 100% of children being 9 years old. Imitation synkinesias were present in 80% of children aged 4 and in less than 20% at 11 years old. The thumb-finger opposition was achieved by 92,5% of children aged 8. Conclusions: it is found that motor development has sequentially ordered stages, where the most significant changes in the maturation of motor systems occur between 5 and 6 years of age.
